After a construction period of one and a half years, Variosystems finishes the plant expansion in Sri Lanka, thereby doubling its production capacity. The global electronics service partner with headquarters in Steinach, Switzerland, is now manufacturing electronics and wire harness solutions over an area of 30,000 square meters. The state-of-the-art new building is an energy-autonomous construction and has received the Platinum Green Building Award. At the opening on November 24, the management of Variosystems welcomed more than 100 guests.
30,000 square meters for the high-volume production of high-quality electronics and wire harness solutions: By doubling its production capacity in Sri Lanka, Variosystems is setting the course for further global growth. On November 24, 2023, one and a half years after the start of construction, the electronics service partner opened the new building in Badalgama in the presence of more than 100 guests. The largest location of the group offers, in addition to the high-volume electronics and wire harness production, space for sales, purchasing, logistics, test engineering, and quality management services.
“The location in Sri Lanka is a central component of our vision. We want to support international customers with local supply chains, competitive prices, and global quality standards – true to our motto ‘co-creating leading innovators.’ Through the expansion, we are strengthening our presence in the growing Asian market and our global electronics supply chain,” announced Stephan Sonderegger, CEO of Variosystems, at the opening. Together with the whole executive leadership team, he greeted numerous guests from industry and politics. “With its 25 years of experience in Sri Lanka and steady growth, it is a perfect example of the economic partnership between Switzerland and Sri Lanka. As a result of its social and sustainable commitment to the region and its population, the company has become an integral part of the economic mosaic of Sri Lanka,” emphasized the Swiss Ambassador Siri Walt.
Keeping Pace with the Growing Asian Market
As a full-service provider of electronics solutions, Variosystems covers the entire value chain from development, industrialization, and production to life cycle management. The internationally active Swiss company has been operating in Sri Lanka since 1998. The Badalgama location in the north of Colombo was opened in 2013. It currently has more than 1,300 employees. The expansion will create around 600 further jobs over the next three years.
“The expansion of the manufacturing facilities in Sri Lanka was a logical step in the development of the VARIOexperience for our customers. In this way, we can continue to meet the growing demand for first-class electronics manufacturing services in the region in the future,” explained COO Stefan Walther. State-of-the-art production lines and the latest machinery enable the efficient and flexible production of electronics solutions compliant with the highest quality standards. Wire harness solutions for industry as well as the transport and mobility sector are also manufactured in Badalgama.
Environmentally and Socially Sustainable
In addition to quality, Variosystems focuses on the highest social and environmental standards in its internationalization. Besides production and office space, the site in Sri Lanka also accommodates a wastewater treatment plant for the irrigation of a vegetable cultivation area for the employees. The electricity requirements of the 30,000-square-meter site are met in an environmentally friendly manner by a photovoltaic system with an output of 1.4 megawatts. The Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL) recognized the energy-autonomous new building with the Platinum Green Building Award. With its own hostel, sports facilities, library, health care station, canteen, and training center, Variosystems offers local specialists an attractive working environment.
