Hannusch Industrieelektronik GmbH, based in Laichingen (Baden-Württemberg, Germany), is an experienced EMS provider specializing in demanding electronics manufacturing. To increase line flexibility and optimize setup and throughput times, the company implemented a new SMD production line equipped with automation and software solutions from the ASYS Group. The collaboration between Hannusch and ASYS has been ongoing since 2009 and was further strengthened through this project.

Seamless Communication for Efficient Product Changeovers

The objective of the line concept was to economically manage up to 20 product changeovers per day without compromising equipment availability or throughput. This required short setup times as well as stable, standardized machine-to-machine communication across the entire line.

The line is equipped with multiple ASYS modules for PCB handling, including loading and unloading modules, transport systems, buffer and magazine solutions, turning and singulation units, as well as workstations and interface stations. The hardware is complemented by the SynapticaOS Hermes Assistant as a central software solution for product and line management.

The VEGO modules used automatically adapt to different PCB formats and ensure a continuous material flow, even with frequent product changes.

Successful Implementation of Standardized Interfaces

During the project, the integration of the Hermes standard posed a technical challenge, as it is interpreted differently by various equipment manufacturers. Through close coordination between Hannusch, ASYS, and the involved machine suppliers, end-to-end Hermes communication across the entire line was successfully implemented.

Scalable Architecture for Future Automation Steps

The Hermes standard and the associated software solutions are continuously being further developed at ASYS. Currently, Hannusch uses the Hermes Assistant for product data management and line changeovers. Looking ahead, the changeover process is planned to be further automated and executed directly at the machines. In addition, cross-line communication is to be expanded in the future to unlock further efficiency potential across the entire production environment.

“The collaboration was always very pleasant and on an equal footing. Response times were fast, and the support was excellent.” Michael Hannusch, CEO, Hannusch Industrieelektronik GmbH.
