Fuji Corporation (headquarters: Chiryu, Aichi; Representative Director, President and CEO: Joji Isozumi; hereafter referred to as “Fuji”) conducted an SMT placement evaluation of Broadcom’s Co-Packaged Optics (CPO*1) Ethernet switch, the Tomahawk® 6 – Davisson*2, using its NXTR SMT pick and place machines. This assessment demonstrated successful component transport performance and placement accuracy. This achievement makes Fuji machines the first in the industry*3 to successfully demonstrate SMT placement of this component. The placement evaluation was conducted jointly by Broadcom (headquarters: California, United States), Celestica (headquarters: Toronto, Canada), and Fuji.

Development background

With the widespread adoption of generative AI applications, the importance of data center networks capable of interconnecting large numbers of GPUs and AI accelerators is growing, along with the demand for higher computational performance for AI servers and related data center equipment. CPO technology enables high-density optical I/O configurations by integrating a switch ASIC*4 and optical engines*5 in a single package. This technology is attracting attention for its ability to reduce power loss associated with signal transmission. Broadcom’s Tomahawk® 6 – Davisson is a next-generation Ethernet switch that incorporates this CPO technology, supporting higher performance and lower power consumption in networks for AI data centers.

In this evaluation, a Tomahawk® 6 – Davisson components, weighing in at approximately 1.3 kg, was successfully placed using the NXTR machine, with component transport performance and placement accuracy verified. In addition, Fuji has confirmed that the AIMEXR, its SMT pick and place machine for large panels, offers the same placement capability based on its design and machine specifications.

*1: CPO (Co-packaged Optics): An advanced packaging technology that integrates semiconductors and optical communication components into a single package.

*2: Tomahawk® is a registered trademark of Broadcom Inc.

*3: Based on Fuji’s research as of October 5, 2026, Fuji is the first in the industry to successfully demonstrate the SMT placement of Broadcom’s Tomahawk® 6 – Davisson using SMT pick and place equipment.

*4: ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit)

*5: Optical engine: A module that sends and receives optical signals, converting electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa.

Future plans

Under the concept of Zero placement limits, which aims to reduce the placements that cannot be done to zero, Fuji is working to develop technologies that eliminate restrictions in the placement process one by one. Going forward, we will further strengthen our capabilities to support advanced package devices, which are becoming larger and heavier. We will continue to contribute to the advancement of next-generation electronics manufacturing, including AI server-related equipment.
